Pubs are a symbol of Great Britain. And pubs that are 500 years old are must-visit places.
There is one must-visit pub in Sheffield. So why not relax and have a beer there? The Old Queen's Head pub is indeed one of the oldest buildings in Sheffield. It was built at the end of the 15th century. And it still stands today!
The building is built in the typical half-timbered style of old English houses. Probably you have already seen the white houses with dark load-bearing wooden towers on the narrow streets of Europe. This effect is visually dividing the house into segments.
The pub did not appear in the building immediately. At first, it was an ordinary residential building. And only in the 19th century beer barrels were brought there, and the residents of Sheffield began to stay there all evening long.
According to one version, the pub is named after Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots and France. Mary Stuart is known throughout the world as the Executed Queen and eternal rival of Queen Elizabeth I. Mary Stuart prepared the murder of Elizabeth. To do this, she had a secret correspondence with agents of the Catholic forces, but their heinous plot failed. Elizabeth I found out everything and ordered the execution of her rival. At the end of the 15th century, Mary Stuart was imprisoned and later beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle.
Later, Mary Stuart's son, King James of England, moved her remains to Westminster Abbey. Interestingly, now two rival Queens are buried very close to each other. Elizabeth's grave is also located there.
The unusual fate of the unfortunate Queen inspired the owners of the pub to this name.
Just imagine that you are drinking beer in the Old Queen's Head pub, a house with a 500-year history, where people lived, performed their daily tasks, quarreled, loved, raised children, had fun. History and life are in every millimeter there!
