An oasis in the heart of the metropolis! It's about the Elizabethan gardens in the center of Plymouth.
To be on the other side of the noisy Barbican quarter, behind the old buildings, climb the stairs, hear the silence and breathe in the full aroma of roses…to do this, just dive into the doorway on New Street. However, the street has not been "new" for 400 years.
There, in the heart of the city, are the Elizabethan Gardens. This is a delightfully quiet, cozy and peaceful place. There are many benches to relax on a hot day. The gardens are located on the backside of the old houses. This is another nice feature of this place. You will have the opportunity to look at the back of houses that have been there for 400 years.
In fact, there is more than one garden there. There are four of them. They are located on different levels and are connected by secret passages and stairs. Gardens appeared, relatively recently, on the ruins of old cottages. Residents arranged the gardens in 1970 in honor of the 350th anniversary of the departure of the Mayflower ship to the New World.
The atmosphere of the Middle Ages is created not only by dilapidated buildings but also by rare plants that grew on the territory of Plymouth in the 16th century. They also make this place full of freshness! There are delightful rose gardens, hedges trimmed in the Elizabethan style, and bright lawns. Even though the gardens are in an open space, there is a doorway. This is all that remains of the hospital for the poor, which was there in the 17th century. Stone paths paved with 300-year-old cobblestones also remind of the age of these places.
In the Elizabethan gardens, you can immediately kill two birds with one stone: relax from the busy life of Plymouth, gain strength before a new walk, and admire the ruins of real history – the remains of residential buildings.
