Unusual places

Do you have a mortgage? Don't you have enough space in your apartment? Do you want to live in an ecologically clean area? Take a shovel and go to Nottingham to dig your house! This is a British joke! But there is a grain of truth in every joke.

Surprisingly, under the ancient city of Nottingham, there is no less ancient city of caves. It is not yet known what came first. All the tunnels were dug manually by local people. In fact, it is not so difficult to dig a tunnel from the house to the next pub. Nottingham stands on sandstone, which, because of its natural softness, is easy to dig.

According to the latest data, there are about 800 caves under the city! The first date from the XIII. The finds of this century were found by archaeologists. However, the caves may be much older, who knows. Their exact age is unknown. Besides, only about a hundred tunnels have been explored yet.

Over the centuries, the caves of Nottingham have been used as a tannery, as cheap housing for the poor, as a bomb shelter, and, of course, for covert operations.

The most famous cave in Nottingham is Mortimer's Hole. A secret underground passage was used by the King's soldiers to sneak up on Roger Mortimer and kill him. It is 100 meters long. The cave starts from the Medieval castle Castle Rock and reaches the brewhouse yard.

During The Second World War, the caves and unexplored webs of these tunnels were used as natural bomb shelters. These caves are specifically combined and slightly expanded to accommodate, and therefore save, hundreds of people. The sand was also taken from there to build external fences and fortify cities.

And Robin Hood, of course! It is impossible not to remember him in Nottingham. According to legend, this generous robber also traded there.

The locals have approached the historical monument in a very original way and have equipped pubs there.
