The most attractive and exciting prison in the world! The Tower has changed many roles since the 11th century. But most of all tourists come there to tickle their nerves with legends about executed monarchs: Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, the wives of King Henry VIII, the Kings of Scotland and France, priests and numerous dukes, the King's confidants and mutineers who rebelled against the system.

At first, the tower was the residence of monarchs. There was a church, gardens, parks with paths for walking, stored Treasury, and weapons. The tower was and remains a true symbol of the great British Empire. Whoever owns the Tower owns Britain!

Even today, ten centuries later, there is a belief that the Tower holds the power of the Empire. This also confirms the importance of the ravens that live outside the walls of the fortress today. There are six of them and each one has a name. They were named after Celtic and Norse gods and mythical heroes: Hugine, Munin, Thor, Branwen, Gwyllum, and Baldrick. According to legend, as soon as the ravens leave the Tower, everything will be over and the British monarchy will collapse! This seems like a strange belief, but it is taken very seriously there. The ravens are closely monitored and their wings are constantly clipped.

The walls of the tower remember not only the emaciated moans of prisoners and the sound of shackles but also the roar of lions and tigers. In one of the towers, a mini-zoo was organized for the amusement of the Kings. The entrance for ordinary humans was paid. Everyone chose how to pay for himself. You could throw a few pennies into the Treasury of the British Empire, or ... make a sacrifice. Small pets, cats and dogs, were accepted at the entrance. They were fed to the lions, and so the owners went to the menagerie for free.

Not every royal subject could afford to eat the same meat as the King. But the tower guard had that privilege. This is why they got their nickname "Beefeaters". The guards of the most impregnable prison in Britain look like a tourist attraction. They wear Tudor suits, embroidered with gold thread. One of these costs about 7 thousand pounds!

And they are probably the bravest men in England! After all, they guard the fortress day and night. As the sun sets over the tower, the beautiful Anne Boleyn appears in the palace windows with her head under her right arm, and execution scenes are played out in the courtyard. It is believed that the souls of the executed cannot leave the place where they lost their lives.

The Tower of London holds many secrets. At least some of them are definitely worth it for you to try to solve them!
