Let's go visit the local archbishops! The Cathedral of St. Mungo was built in the early 12th century and is currently a unique object of Gothic architecture in Scotland. St. Mungo's Cathedral is the only surviving Cathedral on the mainland.

It is located in the North of the city, away from the commercial and noisy part of it. Therefore, it is quiet and peaceful.

According to legend, the first stone on this site, in the so-called Old Glasgow, was laid by Saint Mungo himself. The Saint's real name was Kentigern. Under this name, he is celebrated in Ireland and Wales. Mungo built a chapel and monastery on the site of the future cathedral, where he lived for 13 years as a recluse. Only then was he made a Bishop. The cathedral also contains the tomb of Saint Mungo. He is still revered in Glasgow: he is considered the patron and protector of the city.

Interestingly, this is not the first building of the cathedral. The first was destroyed by fire and then rebuilt. The building was again reconstructed and slightly expanded in the 15th century, and since then has not been touched.

There is one curious detail. St. Mungo's Cathedral is only historically a Cathedral. In fact, there is no Episcopal pulpit, and services are held by the Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

In the Cathedral, you can not only attend the service and admire the incredible architecture, but also get an education. It is home to the oldest school in Scotland. After primary education, get a higher education – within the walls of the cathedral there is also the University of Glasgow.

Next to the cathedral, there is an ancient necropolis. Even though it is a cemetery, it is a very picturesque place. From the Cathedral of St. Mungo to the necropolis, you can walk on a small bridge, which has a slightly sad name "Bridge of Sighs".
