You will be surprised that there are no knights in shining armor on black horses, ladies in chic expensive skirts and stiff corsets! It seems that if there is an Edinburgh castle, then there must be all this!

The place is stunning in its beauty and atmosphere. History and fairy tale are mixed there! The main street of Edinburgh, the Royal Mile, leads to the castle. So you will definitely not miss the ancient fortress.

The first feature is that the castle is located on an extinct volcano! It was extinguished long before people settled on the hill and began to build an impregnable fortress around them. Archaeologists have proved that the first people appeared on the" Castle Rock " about 1000 years b.c. This was and still is the castle of Edinburgh. The history of the fortress is very complicated. Historians have managed to establish that in 600 a.d. the castle has already stood in its place! Although some historians question this fact.

More or less true descriptions of the fortress are dated around 1093. Then it was called "Castle of the virgins" and belonged to King Malcolm. Then the owners of the fortress constantly changed. After all, "To Own Edinburgh castle was to own Scotland". The walls of the fortress have seen many bloody battles, deaths, new Kings and Queens. Despite all that this impregnable building has managed to endure. It still exists and is one of the most visited attractions in the UK.

The castle was opened for tourists relatively recently. Following an ancient precept, it was carefully guarded: the castle was almost a secret object after the Second World War. The fortress belonged to the Ministry of Defence of Scotland and was even included in the list of fortifications.

Be sure that the tour will take you at least a day. After all, the road to the fortress runs through a series of streets - the Royal Mile.

Address: Castlehill, Edinburgh EH1 2NG.
