One of Bristol's most iconic landmarks is the ship. This is not just a ship, but a huge transatlantic liner. At the end of the nineteenth century, it carried passengers from Bristol to New York.

Just by looking at it, it`s possible to imagine the crowds of passengers rushing on Board with suitcases and hatboxes. How many Britons were taken to the New World by this ship! Today, you will not be able to go to other shores on it, but you can make another trip, a trip in time!

Imagine: it was a real breakthrough for its time. It was one of the most perfect steamers of the end of the century: the only one that combines both a metal body and a screw engine. This was another proof of the genius of human thought.

"Great Britain" is striking in its scale! The ship is 98 meters long and has a displacement of 3,400 tons. It was the first steamship in history with a metal hull that crossed the ocean in just 14 days! Oddly enough, it was the crisis and the increase in wood prices that gave rise to the development of shipbuilding and the use of metal.

From the outside, "Great Britain" looks like a ship, but inside it is a real palace. The common rooms have dim lights, marble columns, a string of tables, and cushioned seats. The cabins are a little more modest. They are small enough and only suitable for sleeping. There are bunk wooden beds, a small mirror, and a night light.

How the passengers lived and what they did for two weeks, you can find out by visiting this museum. Each trip was difficult for the liner. Due to numerous breakdowns, it quickly fell into disrepair. So "Great Britain" was no longer used for passenger transportation.

In 1970, the ship was returned to Bristol. The museum was opened after the restoration. Now the ship is in dry dock, the lower part of the hull is covered with a special glass, under which a certain level of humidity is constantly maintained so that the ship does not rust.
