Bone-chilling cold, benches for flogging and portraits that depict the last moments of the lives of a variety of people...welcome to Crumlin Prison!

This is the most gloomy sights of Belfast. The prison has only recently become a museum. Today, crowds of tourists come to see the inhumane conditions in which the prisoners lived. Whereas before bombs were exploding and people were executed.

The incredibly cold and sinister Crumlin prison is called the European Alcatraz. From 1846 to 1996, 25 thousand people visited this place, and for most of them, these walls were the last thing they saw in their lives.

The building was built in the Victorian era. At the moment, it is the only one preserved in England. Not far from the Crumlin Prison is the court. The condemned man never went out on the street again but was led straight to his cell through special secret corridors.

The atmosphere is frightening and creepy. Now and then you feel a cold shiver. There are strange sounds and images as if the executioner is about to enter the cell and you will witness someone's last moments of life...The most sinister place is the cell in the basement. The bodies of the hanged were thrown there to make sure that the execution was done. The loop on which the execution took place also survived…

One of the portraits hung in the corridor of the prison shows a pretty girl in a light straw hat decorated with wildflowers. In a few minutes, she will be hanged for selling her body…and the flowers on the hat indicate the price she had set for herself.

Crumlin Prison is a tough place. You need to be prepared that among the portraits of prisoners you can see children. In those days, both a brutal killer and a starving toddler who stole an apple were sent there.

The prisoners practiced art while awaiting execution. Their crafts are now also presented in the corridors of the prison.
