Peace Walls
Belfast and surrounding

Belfast is a wonderful city with a thousand different places for leisure. There are museums, modern unusual sculptures, and parks...enjoy It as much as you want. But there is a sad, but equally interesting part of Belfast: the Peace Walls.

It sounds a bit contradictory because peace is unity, freedom, and not a fence. The walls continued to be built and painted with graffiti until the end of the 90s. There were roadblocks in certain places. A good sign is that many police posts are now empty. They are even open for tourists. It is hoped that these walls will soon live up to their name.

The walls of the world are inextricably linked with the history of Belfast and it is impossible not to mention them. The wall is a kind of symbol of a conflict that has been going on for more than 500 years, and the last 300 years have been particularly violent. It's all about religion. In Belfast, there is, literally, a war between Catholics (Irish) and Protestants (British). That's why there are about 20 kilometers of walls in Belfast today.

The locals do not want to accept the faith imposed by the British and actively resist. Fierce fighting there has been going on up to the present time. The last wall was built only in 2008. And the residents are not ready to demolish them yet. According to locals, the walls that separate Catholic areas from Protestant ones make you feel safe. There are gates in the walls, sometimes guarded by the police, which are open during the day but closed at night.

The locals have found a use for these walls. They started drawing graffiti on them. Most often, these are paintings on political subjects, but some are also about sports, culture, and religion. Some even feature paintings by famous artists. Those walls that local artists did not choose as a canvas have been just covered with bright posters.
