Oland is a collection of interesting places and attractions in Sweden. First, to get to the island, you need to cross the longest bridge in Sweden, the Oland Bridge. It is considered a tourist attraction. Thousands of tourists annually take pictures of the bridge and its endless pillars (by the way, there are as many as 156 of them).
Oland also boasts many old windmills, some of which still operate. They look amazing! And the photographs with these rarities in the background are incredible.
After the mills, you can go to the Stora Alvaret. It is a huge limestone plateau, whose bedrock is 400 million years old. The Stora Alvared is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is under its protection. This windswept place is covered with dwarf trees. By the way, scientists explored the plateau and discovered two ancient cemeteries, Gettlinge and Eketorp.
After the plateau, be sure to try the local cuisine. You can order the famous Swedish cured salmon, the national dish "Eelebrod" which is the so-called "beer soup" (although beer is actually added to the soup, it is impossible to get drunk, since alcohol in beer has time to evaporate during cooking). Few people dare to try the signature Swedish dish "Surstromming". It is a fermented herring that smells absolutely unappetizing, but its taste is striking in its uniqueness and dissimilarity to fish. While eating, you need to remember that the Swedish desserts are very delicious, so it is better to leave room for at least a couple of them.
The island annually hosts the Skordefest harvest festival. These days, everyone can not only buy vegetables from local farmers but also work on their farms to plunge into rural life and understand how difficult it is to be a farmer. Farmers from all over Sweden come to the harvest festival. People show each other what they have achieved by working every day. During the Skordefest, the city center is adorned with a symbol of the festival, a scarecrow with a pumpkin head.
To conclude, Oland is a must-visit place in Sweden if you want to understand the identity and the character of locals.
