Gothenburg has many different attractions, but there are a couple of must-visit places. For example, the Alvsborg Fortress, which was built twice. The first fortress was built in the 14th century on the southern bank of the Gota River estuary. In the Middle Ages, this fortress protected the only Swedish access to the North and Atlantic Seas. At that time, the fortress was repeatedly conquered by the Danes. But the most tragic occupation occurred during the Seven Years' War between Sweden and Denmark. Then the Swedes had to pay the invaders an impressive amount of money for the fortress. Today, only the ruins of the original fortress remain: they are covered with a canopy to save the historical value from further destruction.

The new fortress was built in the 17th century next to the ruins of the old one, on a small island where the Gota River flows into the sea. The fortress is very well preserved, every part of it is well maintained. It seems that the cannons and other weapons are specially polished to shine. The size of the fortress is striking in strength and solidity. Walking through it, tourists can immediately imagine how it was captured by the Danes, how the battles were fought, how the Swedes died for their state. And, although the fortress was restored after the destruction, it seems that all those tragic and important events for Sweden took place right here.

The towers of the fortress offer stunning views of Gothenburg and its embankment. Other gorgeous photos can be taken against the background of ancient walls. By the way, the fortress houses a small chapel, where marriage ceremonies are held.
Guided tours to the fortress are only available in summer, from June 27 to August 17. Just take a boat at the coast of Gothenburg and wait only half an hour to come to the fortress and start to enjoy the history.
