Haga, which began to grow in 1640, is the oldest district in Gothenburg. The circuit of the district is an hour walking. But there are some things that are worth spending the whole day on, such as stone-paved streets, wooden two-story houses, and cozy courtyards. Any tourist in Gothenburg should take a walk in Haga. Although the district is considered the oldest, it is also the smallest, with only four thousand inhabitants.

Originally a suburb of Gothenburg, Haga began to develop in the 19th century, during industrialization, when workers were actively settled in this district. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was inhabited by over fifteen thousand people, the local houses were decaying and turning into slums. The authorities of Gothenburg wanted to fix up Haga and decided to reconstruct it. However, the residents were outraged and did not allow authorities to implement the plans. Thus, the streets and houses have been preserved in their original form, many destroyed houses have been rebuilt, and those that have lost their presentability have been restored.

Today, Haga is a trendy tourist district with many small shops and cafes.

Cafe Husaren (Haga Nygata, 28) serves the world's largest cinnamon buns that are known as a culinary symbol of Sweden. Lovers of chocolate can visit Cafe Bräutigam (Haga Nygata, 13,), where marzipan and chocolate have been produced for more than 140 years.

The second-hand bookstores keep rare editions of old books. The hat stores and equipment repair shops also deserve special attention. In general, the present-day Haga district is a perfect union of antiquity and modernity, which makes it so attractive for travelers.
