Bilbao is one of the greatest treasures of the Basque Country. It’s an industrial port city in Northern Spain, rich with stunning architecture and surrounded by picturesque mountains. Bilbao doesn’t have direct access to the sea. Instead, this city lies at the estuary of the Nervion River that flows into the Bay of Biscay. Besides, it has served as an important transport route and centre of socio-economic life since ancient times. Bilbao Embankment, spread over 3 kilometres, has gathered all the important landmarks around itself. A stroll on it is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the city: it is like a full-fledged city tour.

In the west, Bilbao Embankment starts with the Euskalduna Bridge, built in 1997. It was named after a shipyard that used to operate there in the 20th century but was closed in the late 1980s. Today, the Maritime Museum is located in its old docks. Also, next to the bridge, there is the Conference Centre and Concert Hall of the same name, with the large Dona Casilda Iturrizar Park and the modern San Mames football stadium behind it.

We walk eastward along the Nervion and find a place where different historical eras cross over curiously. Here we met with the bascule bridge Deusto, built in 1936 and no longer operating, and the modern Iberdrola Tower, the tallest building in the city. This glass skyscraper was built in 2012 as headquarters for an energy company of the same name. An exhibition of the works of Basque artists is located in the lobby, and an operating viewing platform is situated on the 25th floor.

We continue our stroll on the embankment and stumble upon the brightest and most expressive building of Bilbao, a branch of the modern art museum of Solomon Guggenheim. In its exhibition space, permanent and temporary exhibitions of Spanish and international artists are displayed. However, most visitors are attracted to the place because of the gallery building itself: it is an architectural fantasy of American deconstructivist Frank Gehry and the greatest creation of our time.

And this is just the beginning… The attractions listed above are just a small snippet of what awaits everyone who decides to promenade along Bilbao Embankment and see all the treasures of this city for themselves.
