What does freedom mean to you? It’s a difficult question as there is no right answer. Everyone understands this fleeting moment, this feeling differently. For some, it’s being close to their loved ones in their hometown, or travelling, or getting to the seashore and taking a deep breath, or finally eating their favourite ice cream.
In Barcelona that offers various, but especially historical attractions, there’s a relatively new yet memorable one called “The Kiss of Freedom”. The installation is only 6 years old. But its rise to fame was very quick. At first sight, “The Kiss of Freedom” is a close-up of a passionate kiss shared by two people. But it’s only the first impression...
It’s not easy to find the mosaic (and that’s exactly what that is, a mosaic). It’s hidden somewhere in the alleyways of the Gothic Quarter. It would have been easier to go with the flow, walk around, enjoy the beautiful city, be free. And that’s where you’ll find it! A little hint – look for it in the Old Town. You can’t go wrong.
It’s hard to miss this attraction. “The Kiss of Freedom” is a giant mural covering the whole wall. The beautiful kiss can be seen from a distance of 15-20 metres. But don’t keep your distance, don’t be shy and come closer. Because the depth of this work is revealed up close. The kiss itself is not that important. With each step, the whole picture starts to disintegrate into smaller fragments. Each one of them has a meaning. They reflect the essence of the mural. Each mosaic piece is a photograph that captures a moment of freedom for different people. The photo-mosaic gathers many people. It’s hard to leave the place before examining each photograph in detail.
This attraction can raise your spirits, make you smile and, perhaps, even cry over especially touching moments. The installation became a symbol of love, freedom, compassion and willpower.
