The Gothic Quarter in Barcelona is over 2000 years old and is one of the most recognisable areas of the city – it’s full of charm and has a fascinating history. It’s a whimsical world where every architectural detail serves to convey the enigmatic atmosphere of the mysterious Dark Ages.

The ancient quarter stretches from Placa de Catalunya through a famous pedestrian street La Rambla to Via Laietana avenue. Wherever you go, there are numerous surprises: from tiny alleyways to cosy squares. The mesmerising medieval entourage is complemented by numerous historical landmarks and unusual tourist attractions that are definitely worth visiting.

In the heart of the Gothic Quarter, towers the magnificent Barcelona Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia. It is the most important architectural monument in the area. Its construction started in Roman times (the 12th century) and ended only in the Dark Ages (the 15th century). However, the cathedral only reached its final form at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Admire the grand facade executed in the Gothic style with an abundance of Catalan motifs and delicate details, then peek inside to get inspiration from the bright and spacious interior of the sanctuary.

While walking along winding alleyways of the Gothic Quarter, it’s impossible to miss a few more wonderful Gothic temples among which there are Santa Maria del Pi and Santa Maria del Mar, the Basilica of Saints Justus and Pastor, and the Chapel of Santa Agatha. The latter is no longer used for religious services, instead, it hosts a vast collection of the Museum of the History of Barcelona.

One of the most picturesque streets of the Gothic Quarte houses the museum devoted to the founder of Cubism, the Museu Picasso. It takes up several medieval palaces follow the style of Gothic civil Catalan of the 13th-14th centuries, and its collection includes engravings, painting, sketches and other works of the famous master that were created during different periods of his life and work.

As opposed to Barcelona’s art galleries, famous among tourists, there is the Museu Frederic Mares, a hidden gem of the Gothic Quarter, located in a modest square not far from Barcelona Cathedral. The exhibition space, situated on the grounds of the Grand Royal Palace, includes a private collection presented by the local sculptor Frederic Mares Deulovol to the city.
