La Muralla Roja is an apartment complex located on the Mediterranean coast in the Spanish town of Calp. The combination of strict geometrical design and the bright colour scheme of the building brings thousands of tourists and street photographers to Alicante every year. The neverending noise of camera shutters is probably annoying for the actual residents of the complex, however, that’s the fate of those who choose to live in an architectural masterpiece.

The famous building has a rather prosaic name, the Red Wall, however, it is the crowning achievement of a modern Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill. He created this geometrical paradise in 1973, and ever since then, La Muralla Roja is regularly featured on the lists of the most photogenic buildings in the world. Some tourists confess that there are only two buildings in Spain capable of drawing so much attention. The first one is, of course, Gaudi’s creation, and the second one is Bofill’s. The contrast between La Muralla Roja and the natural landscape is truly impressive.

With the Red Wall, the architect was striving to erase the line between private and publish architecture and to “rephrase” North African casbahs (Arabia citadel), while at the same time maintaining the traditional Trangierean colour palette. As a result, the building’s design combined Arabian and African architectural styles and the aesthetic of constructivism, and it became a futuristic object.

The configuration of the Red Wall is a labyrinth based on the geometric figure of the greek cross with approximately 5-metre arms. Bathrooms and kitchens are located at the intersections of the cross structures, whereas living areas are located on their edges. There is also enough space for solariums, saunas, a restaurant, open swimming pools and covered terraces. For its permanent residents, La Muralla Roja is not that confusing: its courtyards are connected and the structure can be navigated intuitively.

Overall, the complex has 50 apartments and, yes, it is possible to rent them. However, one must book in advance. Considering, that the rent is fairly low, starting at 150 dollars per night, the line of those who wish to spend a weekend there can drag on for months.
