Every nook of Slovenia is full of unique attractions: from the wonderful mountain lakes like the glacial Lake Bled, amazing fairy-tale waterfalls and underground labyrinths of caves to ancient stone castles, medieval bridges, and Baroque mansions on the old winding streets of picturesque small towns. Despite such a rich heritage of the past, it is difficult to imagine at least one Slovenia itinerary without the legendary Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad). It is one of the country's main attractions and the true pride of the Ljubljana citizens.

Rising on a green hill, the great medieval castle is one of few preserved defenses, which has guarded the peace of Ljubljana since the 12th century. Many of the local defensive fortifications were built in the Middle Ages, during the reign of the kings of Bohemia, and later the Habsburg dynasty. The walls had been repeatedly rebuilt until the 15th century, and the formidable watchtower appeared in the castle in the middle of the 19th century. All this was reflected in the castle exterior and the luxurious collection of the modern historical museum within its walls.

The hallmark of Ljubljana, the famous Ljubljana Castle, had served as a defense until the end of the 18th century. Then it became a prison for two centuries. Today, it houses a wonderful museum with an impressive collection of artifacts and regularly hosts various festivals and theatrical performances.

There are two ways to get to the ancient castle: climb the hill and enjoy the clean air and amazing scenery or take a modern funicular and admire the city's surroundings from a bird's eye view. However, nothing is compared with the view from the castle tower of Ljubljana, surrounded by fabulous mountains and green plains covered with flowers.
