The Slovenian town of Domzale is unlikely to surprise tourists with its historical landmarks and archaeological finds. But the town municipality contributes a lot to the development of professional sports, supporting it, which regularly pays off by way of sport-fan tourism.
A source of particular pride of the town is the professional football club Domzale. It was founded in 1921 and is one of the oldest football clubs in Slovenia. The golden age of the club began in 2002. Former Yugoslavian footballer Slavisa Stojanovic took the position of its head coach and led it to the Premier League. The club then repeatedly became the bronze medalist and vice-champion of the Premier League.
Having defeated the Primorye club with a score of 4:0 in 2007, Domzale won gold medals in the Slovenian championship for the first time in history. Along with the medals, it has two Slovenian Supercups of 2007 and 2011 and two Supercups of 2010 and 2016. NK Domzale is the fifth Slovenian football champion club. Hardcore fans don’t want to miss even the home matches of their favorite team and come to its home stadium from all corners of the world.
Today, the Domzale Sports Park, or the Domzale Stadium, accommodates over 3,000 spectators and is mainly used for football matches. The multipurpose arena was built in 1948 per the design of the Slovenian engineer and designer Stanko Bloudek. It has been repeatedly renovated and has two grandstands.
The modern western stand was built in 2004 and has a capacity of over 2,000 spectators. The small eastern one can accommodate about a thousand football addicts. You won’t have to change your plans in case of bad weather, since all the stadium seats are covered with a canopy. Relatively recently, until 2006, matches had been played only during the daytime. Today, 120 floodlights are mounted on towers at the stadium corners, illuminating it from every quarter. It allows the club’s fans to enjoy matches in the evening and at night.
