The most picturesque place in the Triglav National Park is located just a few kilometers from Bled. Elaborately carved by the Radovna River, the fabulous Vintgar Gorge became known all over the world thanks to the former mayor of the Slovenian city of Gorje Jakob Zumer and the famous photographer Benedikt Lergetporer. It was in 1891. A couple of years later, the beautiful gorge was equipped with wooden observation platforms, bridges, and paths, becoming a popular tourist destination of not only the Triglav National Park but the entire state.
Vintgar Gorge got its name due to the shape of a wine glass. It comes from the German word Weingarten, which means "vineyard". However, some people believe that "vintgar" means "a place exposed to the wind". It is always windy in the gorge, indeed. Therefore, it is better to take warm and windproof clothes, even if you plan to come here in the summer. But this is the only drawback of the gorge. Apart from that, Vintgar Gorge is the best place in Slovenia to spend an unforgettable weekend in the realm of pristine nature, far from the bustling metropolis.
More than 1.5 kilometers long, Vintgar is a unique rocky gorge with fantastic landscapes. The height of its walls ranges from 50 to 100 meters. Carving out bizarre curves, the river has created many amazing places, like pools and rapids, but nothing compares to the mesmerizing view of the country's largest river waterfall, Sum, falling from a height of 13 meters. The enchanting sounds of the waterfall can be heard far beyond its territory, informing tired travelers about the end of their exciting journey through the Vintgar Gorge. Another noteworthy attraction of this place is the old bridge over the waterfall. Although it was built back in 1878, even before the official opening of the Vintgar Gorge, you don't have to worry about its safety: it has undergone many renovations.
