Piran is a small picturesque town on the Adriatic coast that resembles the ancient colorful cities of Italy with narrow cobbled streets, bizarrely shaped neighborhoods, and cozy family coffee shops filled with the flavors of the legendary cappuccino in the morning and delicious wines at sunset. There is only one architectural monument that catches the eye of travelers, as it seems too majestic and powerful. It watches over the townspeople from the height of the hill like a guardian and brings them into the fold, inviting them to Sunday masses with the bell ringing.

The impressive complex of sacred architecture includes the Catholic St. George's Church, the bell tower, and the baptistery. The first church on the green hill towered above the town as far back as the 12th century. The magnificent present-day church was built in 1614. Its facade was designed in the style of the Venetian Renaissance, inspired by the 16th-century temples by the famous Italian architect Andrea Palladio. A year later, the church was extended with the bell tower, a replica of the legendary St. Mark's Campanile in Venice. The last building that appeared in the complex in the middle of the 17th century was the baptistery. The octagon-shaped building was made in the Baroque style and was intended for the sacred baptismal ceremonies.

Today, the entire complex is open to the public. The fortification walls of the 17th and 19th centuries have been restored, and a lawn has been laid out in front of the church. It occupies the site of the ancient cemetery, which is only recalled by a small stone tombstone with an inscription in Latin. This is a perfect place to enjoy fantastic views of Piran, the surrounding area, and the azure Gulf of Trieste.

Only the interior decoration can compete with the grandeur of the church exterior. Luxurious marble altars are complemented by biblical paintings and the statue of St. George dating from the 17th century, as well as magnificent ceiling frescoes restored in the early 2000s
