Belianska Cave
Poprad and surrounding

Slovakia not only boasts amazing nature but also hides untold riches underground. In total, there are as many as 6,200 caves in the country!

Slovakia is home to the largest karst region in Central Europe, featuring unique and interesting places to visit. Besides, a fascinating hike in Slovak caves will present tourists with unforgettable emotions and health benefits, especially for people with upper respiratory tract diseases.

Located in the High Tatras in northern Slovakia, Belianska Cave is one of the country’s most amazing sights. It is the only cave accessible to tourists in the area. It is open to everyone, but you can only visit the cave with an experienced guide. Take a train from the nearest city of Poprad, come to the terminal station “Tatranská Lomnica”. Then transfer to the bus, which goes to the stop “Tatranská Kotlina”. From the stop, go up the winding path for about half an hour, following the signs.

The entrance to the cave is located at an altitude of 890 meters above sea level. The climb up the mountain is quite difficult and takes about 30 minutes. Winter is a particularly great time to hike: the snow makes the trees look fluffy and nature becomes fabulous. These places are home to a centuries-old pine forest, and everything there is saturated with the purest mountain air.

The length of the cave is more than 3.5 kilometers. There are two routes specially designed for tourists: short and long. The long route takes almost 1.5 hours.

The cave comprises magnificent halls, underground lakes, giant stalagmites that look like Chinese pagodas, and even waterfalls. As evidenced by the inscriptions preserved inside the cave, this land attracted gold diggers as early as the beginning of the 18th century.

The admission fee to the cave is 8 euros. There is a discount for children, students, and seniors. However, there is also an additional charge for photography or videography inside the cave.

It is best to dress warmly: the temperature inside the cave is no more than +6 °C.

Your cave tour can be combined with a visit to nearby attractions like the Ethnographic Museum, the Evangelical Church, the kids’ rope park.

Do not forget to check the cave opening hours in advance, as the entrance to it is often limited.
