Spisske Podhradie (Spišské Podhradie) is a small town located between two hills in the picturesque Presov (Prešov) region, in eastern Slovakia. It is part of the Slovak Paradise National Park with an area of 210 square kilometers, which is 90% beech and fir forest.

It is a very cozy provincial town with few attractions. Its center is similar to other ancient European towns. It includes a historic town hall, a medieval Romanesque church, and beautiful colorful houses with a Renaissance-tiled roof. The population of the town is no more than 4 thousand people, and its area is only about 25 square kilometers. Of course, the town also has wonderful restaurants of national cuisine and several hotels. The most expensive suite here costs only 45 euros.

Scientists suggest that the town’s history started at the beginning of the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, it was considered a prosperous and thriving town. Today, it attracts tourists traveling in Slovakia primarily due to its location: Spisske Podhradie stands at the foot of the largest castle in the country, Spis Castle (Spišský Hrad). Located on a 200-meter mountain, the castle offers a picturesque panorama of the entire town.

In addition, there is another historical gem included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, Spisska Kapitula (Spišská Kapitula), which is often called the “Slovak Vatican.” It is an old fortified monastery, which previously had no more than 300 inhabitants and consisted of a single street.

The main local attraction is St. Martin’s Cathedral with two pointed towers. Photos often depict it against the background of the architectural dominant, the impressive Spis Castle, located 6 kilometers away. You will have to pay for the entrance to the cathedral, but not during the Sunday service.

You can easily get to the town by regular bus from the nearest cities, medieval Levoča or Poprad. By the way, the latter is the gateway to the beautiful Tatras with unique lakes and caves.
