The name of the Kamzik TV Tower comes from the hill on which it is located. Built in 1975, this 194-meter attraction is still the tallest building in the capital. From whichever side you enter Bratislava, the silhouette of the tower is easy to see. It serves as a reference point and seems to greet guests.
The tower is one of the well-recognized symbols of the capital and a popular tourist attraction, as it is open to everyone. The name of this 439-meter hill presumably translates from German as "wild goat hill" because of the large number of stray animals on its slopes.
The building has an unusual shape and resembles a huge angular pin with a narrow base and an extension in the middle. The tower is crowned with a giant antenna, which provides citizens with a continuous radio and television signal.
Its construction lasted 8 years and involved a whole team of high-class engineers and architects of those years. The tower stands in a picturesque area in the middle of a beech forest on the outskirts of Bratislava. A visit to this panoramic attraction can be combined with a pleasant walk in the bosom of nature: the Kamzik Hill is part of the Little Carpathians. There are hiking and cycling trails, as well as ski and bobsleigh tracks. Besides, several hotels and a cable car are also situated in the tower’s neighborhood.
The TV Tower stands close to several interesting places, like a monument to soldiers who died in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, a monument to the victory over the Turks, and the Military Museum. You can get here by trolleybus: go to the final stop and then walk for about 20 minutes. But the most convenient way to get here is by car: there is a large parking lot nearby.
The observation deck is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please note that it closes 1 hour earlier on Sunday. The entrance to the tower is free.
