The Old Town Hall is a unique historical building located simultaneously in the Main and Primate’s squares of Bratislava.

It is easily recognizable by its openwork yellow clock tower in the Gothic style, which rises above the orange-tiled roofs of the Old Town. Dating back to the 13th century, it is the oldest extant building perhaps in the entire country.

Throughout its long history, the building experienced several wars, fires, floods, and even an earthquake, after which it had to be reconstructed. The peculiarity of the Town Hall is that it has the features of different architectural styles and eras as it consists of 4 buildings built at different times: Jacobus’ house, Pawer’s house, Unger’s house, and the Apponyi Palace.

The Old Town Hall complex is decorated with a colorful tile pattern, which makes it easy to recognize it. Do not forget to go through one of the two portals to find yourself in a cozy courtyard with a beautiful fountain.

Previously, the building was used as a mint, archival storage, city council, and even a prison. So it was the place of fateful decisions, meetings with important guests, and celebrations in honor of the winners.

Today, it houses the Bratislava City Museum, which comprises 11 departments with permanent exhibitions throughout the city. After seeing the impressive exhibits, you should definitely go up to the observation deck to enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city and Bratislava Castle.

It is noteworthy that during the attack of the Great Army in 1809, the Town Hall had been damaged by a cannonball, which remained in the wall. Today, it is a local historical exhibit.

You can combine a visit to the Old Town Hall with sightseeing of other city attractions. On the main square, you should definitely take a photo with the statue of a French soldier and the Roland Fountain with beautiful architecture in the background and then go for a light meal in the 100-year-old Café Mayer.

The Primate’s Palace, the Michael’s Gate, the Franciscan Church, the Jesuit Church, and the Museum of Music are within walking distance.

The nearest tram stops to the Old Town Hall are "Jesenského" and "Námestie SNP."
