Slovakia is known for its stunning, almost pristine nature. In summer, eco-trails, hiking, and recreation on the magnificent mountain lakes are very popular here, and in winter, the snow-capped peaks are favored by climbers and fans of extreme sports.
One of the most famous holiday destinations in Slovakia is the second largest lake in the country, Strbske Pleso (Štrbské Pleso). It is surrounded by a whole recreational complex for vacationers, which becomes a full-fledged ski resort in winter.
The lake is located at an altitude of 1350 meters above sea level in northern Slovakia, near the border with Poland, and is the highest mountain resort in the country. Formed in a natural basin in the middle of the mountains as a result of the glaciers melting, the lake has a maximum depth of 20 meters and a total area of almost 20 hectares.
The nearest city, Poprad, is 26 kilometers from the lake. It has an international airport, making it easy to get to the nature reserve.
This place attracts skiers and snowboarders from all over Europe with its well-equipped sports complex, mountain pistes, and two ski-jump ramps. It regularly hosts competitions of various levels. In 1970, it even hosted the world championship in classic ski disciplines. The ski season traditionally runs from December to March.
In the summer, it is a great place to spend a quiet, secluded vacation in the bosom of picturesque nature among dense coniferous forests. The local climate is considered unique and therapeutic, and the healing mountain air gives the body new strength and energy.
Around the lake, there are many modern hotels, recreation centers, and sanatoriums recommended for the treatment of respiratory diseases and the prevention of cancer.
There are many interesting sights to visit near the lake: the Mlynicka Valley, Demanovska Cave, the Symbolic Cemetery of the victims who died in the Western Tatras.
