Devin Castle is a famous Slovak landmark located 8 km from Bratislava at the confluence of two rivers, the Morava and the Danube. This unique place organically combines human labor with the greatness and beauty of nature.
The castle stands on a cliff about 200 meters high, the view from the top of which is breathtaking.
The first people who chose this place on the clifftop were the Romans. They liked its security and strategic location. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the land was occupied by the Moravian Prince Rastislav, who founded the beautiful Devin Castle here in the 9th century. Alas, the soldiers of the Grande Armée did not spare the unique structure and blew up the castle.
Unfortunately, today only stone ruins remain on the site of the castle. However, this does not prevent the historical site from being included in the list of the most visited tourist places in the country. This is a real open-air museum, attractive for both adults and children. Everyone can enjoy the view of the medieval ruins to their hearts content.
The castle is open only in good weather. The ticket costs 5 euros. It is ideal to come here in the warm and dry season. You will have to walk a lot in the open air, which is not enjoyable in wet and windy weather. What’s most important is to take water and good mood with you. Near the castle, there are a couple of cafes, the ruins of an old church and an unusual monument "Heart of Europe".
You can combine a walk around the castle with a visit to the archaeological museum, as well as the wine-making village of Devin, which houses more than ten wine cellars. Besides, there is a mini-zoo near the castle where you can see and feed such animals as ostriches, llamas, ponies, raccoons.
The castle is easily accessible from the center of Bratislava by public transport (go to the final stop "hrad Devín"). In summer, you can take one of the motor ships. The trip takes about 30 minutes.
