The main shrine of the city, the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky, rises in a picturesque place of modern Nizhny Novgorod at the confluence of the two rivers Oka and Volga. It is one of the five tallest churches in Russia and a real masterpiece of Russian temple architecture. The cathedral looks like one of the absolutely unique ancient Russian tent-shaped churches. Every morning, the cathedral is illuminated by the first rays of the sun, shimmering gold on its ancient ochre stone walls. Every evening, its reflection on the river surface seems to tell the citizens about the end of another wonderful day. And this has been happening every day for more than 150 years since its solemn consecration attended by Emperor Alexander II of Russia and members of the royal family.

Initially, the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky was named in honor of Emperor Alexander II of Russia and was the so-called "fair cathedral", functioning only during the famous Nizhny Novgorod fair and serving as a meeting place for honorary guests of the city. Closed during the Soviet era, the cathedral lost many of its relics. Even its tented roofs were dismantled. Fortunately, it managed to avoid demolition and preserve the miraculous icon of the Mother of God with a particle of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord. By the way, its famous tented roofs were restored later.

Today, the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky is one of the main attractions of Nizhny Novgorod and a center of pilgrimage for Christians. Orthodox believers from all over the region come to its walls to venerate the holy icons with the relics of Alexander Nevsky and Matrona of Moscow, Seraphim of Sarov, as well as the first icon brought to Russia with the relics of the Holy Martyrs Cyprian and Justina. Moreover, there is a belt attached to the Cincture of the Theotokos in 2011, when the sacred relic was displayed in the cathedral for three days.
