The palace of the mouse king and the mouse museum, collections of felt boots (valenki) and linen dolls’ amulets… Everything in the town of Myshkin seems fabulous and mysterious. However, this Russian town is also home to the real heroes: 7,623 residents went off to the war and only 2,969 people returned. More than half of the national heroes were killed in battle or went missing, fighting for the happiness of people, for the freedom and independence of their country. Russians always remember the heroes, refer to acts of valor, and erect memorials and obelisks in their honor. The memorial complex dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the victory in the town of Myshkin is strikingly huge and impressive. The large-scale project with a total area of 1.5 thousand square meters by architect Oleg Medvedev and sculptor Sergei Skal was opened in 2005 on the day of the 60th anniversary of the victory. Since then, there has always been an eternal flame and fresh flowers. The hallmark of the memorial is a bronze statue of a soldier standing in front of bas-reliefs with the names of Soviet heroes, natives of Myshkin, as well as a list of soldiers killed at the front during the war. Three hundred and eighty-two names are remembered and honored by the townspeople, who come here to lay flowers in total silence. In front of the statue of the fearless soldier, there is the eternal flame lit from the Moscow Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On the opposite side of the memorial, visitors can see black granite monuments engraved with lines from the letters of the soldier Ivan Orlov, who died in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942, as well as lines from the letters of his family, full of hope and faith in victory. The center of this memorial complex is occupied by another bronze sculpture “The Book of Memory” with the inscription: “7623 people of Myshkinsky District went off to the war, 4654 people were killed, died of wounds or went missing.”
