Founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC, Braila has an ancient history thanks to its residents, many of whom were people of art and culture. Unfortunately, this city was also the ground for recurrent battles, so it could not preserve its old buildings. The main historical architectural landmarks are religious buildings and mansions of wealthy citizens of the 19th century. At the same time, it was decided to adorn the cultural and historical center of Braila with a theater, which will later become one of the leading and most beautiful buildings of the city.
The Teatrul Rally was built in 1896, but in 1919, it changed its name to the more beautiful sounding Teatrul Comunal (The Communal Theater). Thirty years later, it became the state Theater of Braila Galati. Twenty years later, the theater was named in honor of Maria Filotti, a famous Romanian actress, director, and impresario. This woman considerably contributed to the passing of valuable experience from one generation to the next. The theater proudly bears this name to this day.
The Maria Filotti Theater is one of the best and well-preserved cultural and architectural landmarks not only in the city but also in Romania. It can accommodate 369 spectators and is under the protection of the local authorities. Initially, it was a drama theater, but recently its repertoire was complemented by both opera and ballet. A variety of performances and the best actors against the impressive background scenery of one of the most beautiful European venues are a great reason to spend your time in its halls.
Unfortunately for some tourists, the theater opens its doors only during performances. The only way to inspect its interior is to buy a ticket. This way you will be able to enjoy its luxurious decoration and appreciate the fantastic play of local actors at the same time.
