The main treasure of Southern Portugal, Arrabida Natural Park, is hidden just an hour's drive from Lisbon between two famous resorts: the medieval city of Setubal with an ancient monastery and fortress, and a young fishing village with wild beaches, cozy restaurants, and vibrant nightclubs.
This state-protected land with an area of more than 100 square kilometers is surrounded by picturesque green hills that gently descend to the life-giving waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1976 to protect the natural landscapes, wildlife, and historical and cultural monuments, Arrabida Park has quickly won travelers' love, becoming one of the most visited attractions in the country. The wonderful local landscapes impress everyone. Not to mention the beaches with the mild Adriatic climate, which is often compared to the climate of Dalmatia.
There are three fabulous beaches that are especially popular among tourists and residents of the Portuguese capital: Portinho da Arrabida, Galapinhos, and Figueirinha. They are guarded by a strict caretaker, a magnificent monument of the 16th-century temple architecture – the former ancient Monastery of Our Lady of Arrabida.
You can see these landscapes in the famous Tom Clancy's EndWar video game set in the Third World War. Besides, this Portuguese Nature Park regularly becomes the setting for many popular Hollywood films, like the 1969 James Bond film called "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
Today, Arrabida Park with its fantastic flora and fauna is a destination for ecotourism lovers. There are rare thickets of wild laurel trees, or slim cedars and fluffy seaside pines on the hillsides near the Atlantic Ocean. In total, the park is home to about 1,500 registered species of trees and plants. The diverse and dense vegetation has led to the natural increase of the park's inhabitants. Today, it is inhabited by more than 200 animals, including 35 species of mammals and 16 species of exotic reptiles.
