If Joao Goncalves Zarco had first landed at the Point of Saint Lawrence in the east of Madeira in 1420, he might have returned in a couple of hours. The sea dog would see a harsh landscape without a single sign of life. No trees, no flowers, no gurgle of waterfalls. Only knife-sharp rocks, sand, rocks, withered grass, and the wind that can knock you down. This is the Point of Saint Lawrence!

If you want to go all the way to the point, it is better to arrive early, so as not to wander in the crowd of tourists on the only trail of the peninsula. The distance to the extreme eastern point is 6 kilometers there and the same number back. More than half of the route includes descents and ascents. In the middle of the narrow point, there is a rather well-equipped tourist trail. If you plan to complete the entire route, you need to start no later than 10 am. Walking along the trail, you realize there are completely different landscapes on your right and left. Rocks similar to beautiful layered "pies" (due to various volcanic rocks interspersed with solidified lava) descend to the ocean from the south. Some places on the coast even look like beaches. On the north side, the cliffs resemble Norwegian fjords. There is always a very strong piercing wind, that makes you shrink from the cold even at +24°C. The trail constantly twists to the right and the left of the point. The two highest points of the peninsula (150 meters each) are located approximately in the middle of the way. If you still feel like going on an adventure, you can climb them to take exclusive photos.

The peninsula is not entirely deserted. It is inhabited by spiders, beetles, and lizards. You don't need to look for them: the lizards will come to you and start begging for food as soon as you sit down to rest. The most strong-willed travelers who reach the end of the point are rewarded with a cafe and a toilet (there are no more public conveniences along the way). Since the food is delivered to this cafe only by water, the prices there are quite high. Leaving the point, do not forget about the local tradition: you need to build a pyramid of several stones in memory of such a diverse island.
