Crooked House (Krzywy Domek)

Unusual places

The world wouldn’t have been so bright and cheerful if it were not for the eccentric architects competing in building the most unique dancing house. The first to stand out were the architects of Copenhagen. They created children’s dancing houses on the playground back in the late 19th century. The dancing Center for Brain Health appeared in Las Vegas thanks to the famous Canadian architect Frank Gehry. He is also the one to design the primary dancing house in the world, nicknamed “Fred and Ginger,” in Prague. The glory of the legendary architect Antoni Gaudi still haunts the fans of deconstructivism: every year, new fantastically shaped skyscrapers appear. Yet, so far, only one house, located in a town in northern Poland, can compete with the Czech “dancer.”

The main attraction of Sopot, Krzywy Domek, was built in 2004 by two architects, Szotynscy & Zaleski. The off-beat building was inspired by the work of Polish illustrator Jan Marcin Szancer and Swedish artist Per Dahlberg. The cornerstone of the project in the postmodernist architecture style is an optical illusion, which gives the building a funny dancing look. Inside the Krzywy Domek, within an area of about 4,000 square meters, part of the shops of the Rezydent shopping mall, a small restaurant, and a slot machine room are located. The second floor of the unusual building is occupied by two Polish radio stations: Radio RMF MAXXX and Radio RMF FM. Even though its Prague rival is taller, the Sopot house is more colorful, like a fantastic reflection in the old fairy tale film “Kingdom of the Crooked Mirrors.” You won’t fail to notice this structure, and the line of tourists who want to take a selfie in front of it extends by noon. Therefore, you’d better hurry to the famous house in the morning at dawn. The photo will only turn out more colorful in the first rays of the morning sun.
