Trondheim is one of the most important cities in Norway. All residents of the country consider it a historical and religious center where the soul of Norway «lives». There are lots of monuments and valuable architectural objects. The most significant attraction is the Nidaros Cathedral which annually attracts thousands of pilgrims not only from Europe but also from all over the world. Previously the church was part of the diocese, but after the Protestant Reformation in Europe, it received the status of the main Cathedral of Lutheran bishops.

The history of the temple is very interesting. Many assume that King Olav Haraldsson who died heroically in 1030 during the Battle of Stiklestad was buried at this place. A year after the tragic events Olav was recognized as a saint, and pilgrims began to come to his grave.

In 1070, a small stone building was built around the grave of the holy king with donations from pilgrims. It was probably a chapel. As time was passing by, it grew and turned into a huge cathedral which was completely finished almost 300 years later, in 1300. The best architects and sculptors worked on its creation, thanks to which a real work of art appeared in Trondheim — a majestic cathedral, an example of the triumph of the Gothic style.

During its long life, the Cathedral has experienced many things: there were heyday times when it held services for thousands of believers, and donations were used for the creation of a magnificent decoration of the temple. There were also difficult periods when the building was almost abandoned and even began to collapse.

Over the past 130 years, constant restoration work was carried out to restore the Nidaros Cathedral to its former splendor. Finally, it was a success.

Now the cathedral is the most valuable attraction of the city. It is still used for its intended purpose. Liturgies are held there once a week. There are also concerts and evenings of classical music.

The appearance of the cathedral is striking, as well as its interior decoration. The halls of the temple are decorated with expensive antique furniture and stone statues. Unfortunately, this is only a small part of the original interior of the cathedral. During the time of troubles many valuable exhibits were either stolen or sold and, as a result, were lost forever.

However, even the current appearance of the cathedral impresses every guest.

The soul singer Marvin Gaye sang that there “ain’t no mountain high enough” – but then again, he never came to Norway. With almost 300 mountain peaks above 2,000 metres he would probably have found himself a suitable challenge. For centuries, Norwegians have used the mountains as...
