One of the most modern and majestic monuments in Macedonia is the Millennium Cross. It is 66 meters high and is considered the largest cross in the world. It was erected in Skopje in 2002 to commemorate two thousand years since the Macedonians adopted Christianity. The grand opening of the construction took place in 2008.

The Millennium Cross is the highest peak of the Macedonian capital: not only is it impressive in size but also installed on Vodno Mountain. During the Ottoman Empire times, its current location was called Krstovar, meaning Place of the Cross. There was a much smaller cross situated here before.

The construction was financed by the government treasury. The Macedonian Orthodox Church and the Macedonians from all over the world also contributed: donations came from dozens of countries. Inside the metal construction, there is a lift, delivering tourists to the observation deck. At nightfall, the cross lights up and looks more impressive than at daytime. The size makes it visible from 30 kilometers.

Initially, tourists had to walk up to the Millennium Cross. The cable car construction began in 2010. So starting from 2011, people can get to the foot of the cross by funicular. The length of the road is 1750 meters, and the ascent takes about 8 minutes.

The cross is worth going up not only for the modern monument but also for a fascinating view of Skopje. It offers a fine view of Balkan nature: mountains, green trees, springs. On top of Vodno, there is a summer cafe and a small souvenir shop for tourists. If you conquer the mount on foot, you will see old monasteries and authentic villages on your way.
