The Treskavec Monastery is located in the rocks under Mount Zlatorv, not far from Prilep. It is a picturesque place at an altitude of 1,280 metres over sea level, opening up a beautiful view of Pelagonia. The complex got its name due to the location: during thunderstorms, lightning often strikes nearby.
The monastery is dominated by the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God. It has one nave and a Byzantine dome. It also preserved original frescoes, the oldest of which, between the two towers and on the chapel facade, was created in the mid-14th century. Later, the porch facades were decorated, and the dome received an image of Christ Pantocrator with the Mother of God as Queen, King David, and numerous angels and cherubs. Between windows, there are eight frescoes with holy warriors; Saints George and Demetrius are wearing secular clothes, not that of warriors. One wall of the church represents a marble sculpture of a Roman warrior in a tunic. But it is not a creative architectural solution: the statue was used as a construction material.
Throughout its existence, the abode has repeatedly suffered from severe fires. The first two happened in 1867 and 1990, but the most devastating heavily destroyed buildings in 2013.
Today the monastery includes the church with residential buildings around, a refectory, a library, and household structures. All of them are surrounded by a wall built over the remains of the former fortification. The restoration work continues after that large fire. By the way, many pilgrims coming here settle down for a night in the open air right in the mountains. August 28, the feast day of Assumption of Mary, is a day of the highest attendance.
