The Museumplein, or Museum Square, is a great place in Amsterdam to relax, take a walk, and enlighten oneself. You can spend the whole day here and not get bored at all. After all, the square was named after many excellent museums surrounding it: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Diamant Museum.
The Rijksmuseum is the main state museum of the Dutch capital and one of the most popular art museums in the world. Every year, it is visited by about two million people who get acquainted with the history and culture of the country with the help of the greatest works created by local artists in the 13th-20th centuries. Opened in 1885, the four-story building of the Rijksmuseum houses about eight thousand exhibits. The total collection of the museum includes about a million artworks.
The second most popular institution among visitors is the Van Gogh Museum. It contains the world's most extensive collection of paintings by the great post-impressionist, as well as by his friends, colleagues, idols, and those whose work was significantly influenced by him. Besides, the museum displays Van Gogh's personal belongings. They were collected and preserved by the artist's relatives, who did their best to support him during his lifetime.
The Stedelijk is the most famous museum of modern art in the country. It welcomes up to five hundred thousand visitors a year. The collection of the museum includes ninety thousand works, seven hundred of which form a permanent exhibition. There are works of the most famous representatives of modernism, expressionism, and other art movements of the 19th-21st centuries. They are as bold and challenging as the new wing of the museum, popularly called "The Bathtub" because of its unusual appearance.
Another outstanding attraction of the Museum Square is the Diamant Museum Amsterdam. The exhibition space, opened by jeweler Royal Coster Diamonds, occupies a former 17th-century mansion on Paulus Potterstraat Street. It displays several thousand exhibits dedicated to diamonds, their origin, and their place in human history. You can also book a tour of the company's factory located next door.
