The Koppelpoort
Amersfoort and surrounding
Architecture,  Unusual places
Unusual places

Amersfoort is a city rich in ancient and unusual buildings. One of them is the gate Koppelpoort. Such structures like defensive gates are common in many European cities. But the Koppelpoort has many peculiarities, turning it into a unique architectural landmark, of which all citizens of the small Amersfoort are proud.

The gate was built in 1427 and still pleases residents and guests with its fine appearance. The Koppelpoort is an elegant example of medieval architecture, both austere and beautiful.

Many centuries ago, this gate served as protection: they opened and closed maritime and land ways to the fortress. It was part of the city wall that protected Amersfoort. During the siege, the gate passed a test of strength many times and every time confirmed the words of its creators: these doors are almost impossible to break!

The defensive and protective complex included a secure fortified bridge over the Eem River and two towers. They initially housed the castle security workers, and a while later, it was the meeting place of the boatmen's association.

The gate faithfully served to citizens for hundreds of years and, in 1885, under the leadership of the renowned architect Pierre Cuypers, was carefully restored. What we see today is the result of that work.

Gradually, the gate lost its defensive function. For some time, the towers were empty because of poor condition. It was hard to imagine what can be placed here. From 1969 to 1993, there was a puppet theatre. It could have worked now, but it developed and required more space.

Today it is a tourist sight visited by a large number of guests. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to walk in the wheel to feel like a medieval worker: it often breaks down and becomes dangerous. But anytime you wish, you can look at it and imagine how tough this work was.
