The Sea Museum in Klaipėda is considered the most popular attraction. It is located on the outskirts of the city in the Curonian spit natural park. The museum is visited annually by about half a million tourists from various countries.

In the 19th century, the site of the current museum was occupied by the defensive fortress "Kopgalis", built by the Germans to protect the city of Memel at the entrance to the Curonian lagoon. At the end of the Second World War, the retreating Germans blew up their hideout. The building was in disrepair for a long time.

In 1979, it was decided to use the premises of the former fortress and give them to the first exhibition of the Sea Museum. Since then, the Museum has occupied all the premises of the German Fort and divided the territory into several zones, including the aquarium, the Curonian spit Nature Museum, the Dolphinarium, and the Maritime Museum itself.

Two ancient vessels telling about the historical aspect of this area are moored at the entrance to the fortress. This is a trawl boat and a trawler. Both of them are restored and look like new. Inside, fishing accessories and household items are displayed, looking at which it becomes clear how hard and truly masculine work this is.

In the hill under the fortress, where previously stored deposits of gunpowder, today there is an exhibition of Lithuanian shipping. It tells about the development and methods of building ships. There is also an interesting selection of anchors and propellers taken from a variety of vessels.

In the building of the Fort, there is a marine aquarium, where you can see penguins, fur seals, and lions. There is also a sea show with the participation of black sea dolphins and sea lions. In the depths, you can see more than 30 aquariums that house a variety of fish species, ranging from small river fish to beautiful sea inhabitants. In the department of marine fauna, there are fossilized remains of ancient marine life, the most dangerous inhabitants of ancient seas are represented in the form of sculptures.

The Sea Museum is a must visit not only for children but also for adults. Everyone will find something surprising there and will discover something new.
