The amazing city of Kaunas with numerous cultural heritage sites is definitely the cultural capital of Lithuania. The Gothic Kaunas Castle, the Renaissance Palace of Princes Masalsky, and the Baroque Pazaislis Monastery are only a tiny part of its rich and diverse heritage, which also includes the outstanding Kaunas Town Hall or the white swan as it is called by the local community.

This magnificent monument of medieval architecture stands on the Town Hall Square in the heart of the Old Town. According to historic accounts, it is about 500 years old. Initially, the town hall building was constructed in the Gothic style. However, due to many reconstructions, it has acquired the prominent features of almost all popular architectural styles. For instance, the 17th century accomplished the Gothic structure of the monument with the Renaissance exterior, whereas the 18th century added to the Town Hall some elements of Baroque and classicism as well as the statues of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.

The functions of the Kaunas Town Hall building were also rapidly changing. It was used as an Orthodox church, an ammunition depot, a theater, a fire station, and a temporary residence of the Russian tsars in the 19th century. Then, in the 20th century, it hosted a technical institute, a unique museum of ceramics, and a wedding palace (the latter is still operating). Moreover, the Town Hall is currently also used for official meetings for concluding agreements and contracts.

The lively Town Hall Square is always a hotspot for tourists. It is better to visit this place with the first rays of the sun to properly enjoy the view of the beautiful white swan of the Kaunas Town Hall, sitting on a bench with strong Lithuanian coffee or cool lemonade. Afterward, I would recommend having a walk to the Cathedral Basilica of apostles St. Peter and St. Paul or to the legendary Kaunas Castle or maybe to make a spectacular selfie with an unusual monument to bicycles and go for a walk along Vilniaus, the main pedestrian street of the city.
