The White rose bridge is the highest pedestrian bridge in Lithuania, connecting the banks of the Neman River. For its large proportions, it was even included in the Lithuanian book of records.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Russian Empire strengthened its borders. Lithuania was then part of the Empire. A railway was built specifically for this purpose, and a bridge was built. The bridge was laid out in such a way that both trains and carts could pass over it. In 1915, during the First World War, during the retreat of the tsarist army, this bridge was blown up. The Germans, who then occupied Alytus, built a temporary wooden railway bridge there, which served until 1926 and only then was dismantled.
On the site of the White rose bridge for many years, there were only supports left from the time of the Russian Empire. In 2015, the Lithuanian authorities decided to connect the walking routes of the two banks of the Neman River and build a new bridge on this historical site. The old pillars were not destroyed. They became supports for the new bridge. The height of the White rose bridge is 38 meters, and the length is just over 240 meters.
Today, the bridge can only be crossed on foot or by bicycle: heavier vehicles may not be able to support the bridge pillars. The bridge of the White rose fell in love with the rope jumpers, i.e., the people jumping from a height onto a very thick rubber band. Almost every day they gather in companies and jump off the bridge. The new ones are also allowed to jump for a small fee. So if you always wanted to, but you did not have a chance... So there you can finally do something crazy and jump from the highest bridge in Lithuania with a special elastic band.
The bridge offers a very beautiful view of the whole of Alytus, it is here that all newlyweds come. It is a long-standing tradition of Lithuanians to take photos against the background of the city on their happiest day.
