Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo in Venice
Venice and surrounding
Architecture,  Palaces

To discover an amazing gem of Venetian architecture, located near the Rialto Bridge in the inconspicuous Maltese court (Corte del Maltese), you will have to roam. Finding the way to the palace is not as easy as it seems: many tourists admit that they could not do it. Therefore, the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is considered not just a tourist attraction but a real pearl of Venice. Finding this building lost in the narrow streets is like discovering a real treasure.

Those who manage to find the palace immediately realize its value and peculiarity. For example, it makes many people sincerely happy because there are no crowds of tourists, as in other places in Venice. The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is like no other palace in the world. It does not occupy a huge area, overlook the Grand Canal, or overwhelm with its monumental appearance. However, it's hard to tear your admiring gaze away from it. The lucky ones who get to the palace look at its exterior with surprise. They try to guess what kind of bizarre architectural style it belongs to, and, as a rule, they are always wrong. This is not surprising: the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is full of mysteries that are so interesting to solve.

In fact, the palace combines several architectural styles at once. There are Renaissance and Gothic styles both outside and inside. It is fascinating to view the huge loggias located at each level of the palace and decorated with elegant arches. It is even more interesting to examine the cylindrical tower which gave the building its name: its openwork spiral staircase is known as "bovolo" ("snail"). The staircase is open to the public. You can use it to climb to a small observation deck, which offers a charming view of the city: it seems that Venice is spread before the eyes, and you can touch the neighboring roofs.

Even though the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is lost in the streets and hidden from prying eyes, its location can be called convenient for tourists. It has its advantages: the palace is located at the same distance from the centers of Rialto and San Marco, the main historical quarters of the city.
