What could be more beautiful than hiding from the rays of the southern sun in the cool shade of an antique or medieval monument, listening to the fascinating story of its creation, heyday, and decline? Perhaps only a walk in the castle that towers over the ancient Italian town of Varenna on the shores of the picturesque Lake Como. And although only a high observation tower and several fragments of great defensive walls remain from the legendary Vezio Castle (Castello di Vezio), it is better to spend at least one day exploring it.
Firstly, all the tourists want to enjoy the beautiful views of Varenna and Lake Como, as well as the fresh breeze and the aromas of herbs that grow near the castle walls. And secondly, everyone is happy to hear the ancient local legend of how the majestic stone Vezio Castle was built by the order of the beautiful queen of the Lombards, Theodelinda.
But these are only legends as, in fact, the ancient citadel has existed here since the Iron Age. This is evidenced by archaeological finds – all kinds of arrowheads and simple knight's armor – that can be seen in the museum located in the castle tower. Ancient fossils found in the vicinity of Varenna and Lake Como are also displayed here. The museum's hallmark is the skeleton of the oldest inhabitant of the lake, Lariosaurus, whose age is more than 235 million years.
But the main attractions for modern travelers are the mysterious ghosts of Vezio Castle. Blood-chilling art objects placed all over the castle look very impressive, especially in the dark when they cast long black shadows on the walls. Selfies with ghosts in the background are certainly the perfect decoration for any social media profile that can turn an ordinary tourist into a fashion travel blogger.
You can visit Vezio Castle from March to October. In winter and rainy weather, the castle is closed to the public. However, the rules may change, as it is a private territory owned by the Greppi family.
