Every city has its symbol, illustrated on the souvenirs and postcards. Turin has Mole Antonelliana.
It is not a castle or a city garden, it is the highest bricked building in Europe. Its height is 160 meters, and the third of its size is a spire.
In the 19th century, the Jewish community of Turin asked to build a synagogue. The project was done by Antonelli, but the building process turned to be more expensive and longer as planned. This made the diaspora angry, and they refused to sponsor the project. Then a half-built construction became a property of the city authorities and was named in honor of an architect.
Mole Antonelliana turned to a museum. Firstly, till 1938 there was a museum of Risorgimento, the national movement of Italy.
In the middle of the 20 century, Mole Antonelliana was destroyed during the tornado. One of the towers lost a spire, and it was reconstructed 10 years later.
Since the year 2000, the tower has functioned as a National Museum of Cinema. The collection has items from the shootings, special equipment, movie posters, film strips, and photos.
Moreover, you can lift to the top of the tower and admire the city from the viewpoint.
