Egg Castle

This powerful castle is placed on an island Megaride on the board of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was built in 1139 on the ruins of a Christian church. After it, the castle got over different events: a destroying earthquake in the 14th century, the wars with Italians and the French army in the 16th century. But today it is still in good condition.

Egg Castle was restored piece by piece. After the reconstruction of the northern part of the castle, there was built the stables. In the 15th century, it was re-equipped to a Naples royal residence. Later, the family moved to a New Castle, and this one was functioning as a royal treasury. After the reconstruction of the 18th century, it became a fortress, defending boundaries from the seaside. That century, it was also a prison for famous poets, philosophers, and politicians. 

Egg Castle is placed in a picturesque place. From its viewpoint, you can see the city, Vesuvius and the sea. Inside the castle is a historical museum, which presents pictures of Titian and Vaccaro and household items of the 14th-16th centuries. Nowadays Egg Castle is also a place for celebrations.

The name Egg Castle was given to the castle by the locals. It has two explanations. Firstly, its shape reminds an egg. Secondly, according to the legend, Virgil hid an egg inside the castle. While it is there, Egg Castle is in safety.
