The Cathedral is a must-see sight of Milan. It is placed in the center of a city on a Piazza del Duomo square. The snow-white gothic cathedral attracts the tourists by its beauty and detailed construction.

Till the 12th century, on the place of the Cathedral, another basilica was situated. During a fire, it was destroyed, and the authorities decided to build a new cathedral. This idea and a new project were supported by a clergy.

The building of the cathedral started in 1386 and was continuing for 600 years. During this time, a lot of architects were participating in the construction. By the way, one of them was Leonardo da Vinci.

It is interesting, that Milan Cathedral was the first construction in Europe, made of white marble. Previously, the architects used a white stone. So, this Cathedral is unique – a white basement with a hundred spires, where the main is decorated with a statue of Madonna. On the marbled walls, you can see figures of saints and martyrs, pictures of biblical scenes, gargoyles and chimeras guarding the cathedral. Another decoration of the building – the Middle-Aged stained-glass windows. Over the central altar, right under a dome, one more relic is kept – a nail used for Christ’s crucifix. One time a year, on the 4th of September, it can be viewed by public.

The size of the Cathedral is in second place among all the basilicas. It can contain 40000 visitors. It is great because many people can come to an open viewpoint on the top of the cathedral and enjoy its details and a view on the square.
