Once you get to the outskirts of Ireland, it seems that the air is full of ancient magic. Kylemore Abbey in County Galway is a part of this mysterious world.
The abbey is placed in a very picturesque place, in Connemara, close to the mountain Doughruagh, on a northern side of a lake Pollacappul.
The history of this beautiful castle starts when Margaret and Mitchell Henry fell in love with each other. The couple came here just for a honeymoon but stayed for the whole life. Margaret and Mitchell got a legacy and built the magnificent Victorian castle on a lakeshore where they lived. The house wasn’t just the home for the family, it was also the workplace for the locals. They respect the owners of the house. After a while, Mitchell’s wife died because of a disease. Her husband sorrowed and built a church for her, as beautiful as their love.
The church is built of grey granite, inside it is made of delicate creamy sandstone. The columns of the church are of marble. It seems to be cold and heartless, but the history of this place gives it warmth.
The workers made a tomb under the church, but Mitchell refused to see the most beautiful woman lying underground. Close to the church, he built a mausoleum. Unfortunately, in a couple of years, his daughter was also buried there – the lady died in the accident.
The monks settled in the abbey just in the 20th century, after Mitchell Henry had sold it because of debts. The Benedictines started to restore ruined areas. Some of them today are available for visiting, like the famous “gardens behind the wall”.
