Dublin Castle is one of the most important buildings in the history of Ireland and the main architectural government complex of Dublin. This fact alone is a decent reason to include it on your list of must-see tourist attractions.

Dublin Castle was founded in 1204 by the order of King John of England immediately after the Norman invasion. Initially, the majestic architectural structure was created to protect against external threats in the image and likeness of medieval fortresses. However, it has never been used for military purposes. Until the first half of the 20th century, Dublin Castle mainly served as the residence of the British monarchs of Ireland.

The construction of the castle was completed at the beginning of the 13th century. Even then, it resembled its present-day look. The castle remained intact until a major fire severely damaged much of its building in April 1684. Despite the severe damage, the attraction was partially restored. So today, tourists can enthusiastically explore some of the buildings dating back to the Viking Age and the Middle Ages.

Dublin Castle is a prime example of typical Norman architecture, broken with more modern structures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Inside, it is decorated with a spacious courtyard, which, together with nearby buildings, was once surrounded by strong stone walls with towers. After the fire, the castle complex was expanded by another building, the Chapel Royal. Today, this Gothic construction with rich interior decoration is an architectural monument sometimes used for cultural events.

Until Dublin Castle came into the possession of the Irish government in 1922, its large presence chambers and staterooms hosted many public holidays with balls and banquets. Today, the castle's premises are used for more serious state ceremonies, such as the inauguration of Irish presidents, memorial services, government and official meetings, state receptions, international conferences, etc.
