Even those who do not know a thing about Ireland may hear about the most honored saint in the country - Saint Patrick.
A lot of monuments have histories connected with this saint, especially, in the small, but interesting towns as Westport. In some kilometers from the city, you can find a nice village Aughagower. Apart from beautiful nature, picturesque, but wild views, there is placed a ruined old church, established, through hearsay, by Saint Patrick himself. Besides, he also appointed the first episcope of a parish. It happened 1500 years ago.
Some time ago, Aughagower was the most populated and powerful city in a county. But as time goes by, during the conflicts, the neighboring territories took away the Aughagower’s status of influential episcopacy. The big city became empty, the citizens left for other places. According to the last census, about 1000 locals still live there.
Aughagower is a good place for walking among the ruins of an old church, siding with a cemetery of a modern Catholic city church. From a big construction made by Patrick, just the several half-destroyed walls are left. Among them, a round tower is in the best condition. It looks like a building from fairytales – round and unassailable. Even the door is placed on the height of 2 meters, while the only window is on the top. If Rapunzel was sitting on the top, the length of her hair should be more than 16 meters to let the prince save the woman.
A long time ago, a lightning stroke to the top of the tower, and it fell to a hill. A native found it, made all the pieces together and took to the church, where the top is kept today.
