The Smaratorg Tower is an office and retail building located in the center of Kopavogur, a city to the south of the capital.

The building is the tallest in Iceland, surpassing the unusually looking Hallgrimskirkja church situated in Reykjavik. It is also listed as the fifth among the tallest Icelandic structures: the Smaratorg Tower follows the Eidar (Eiðar) longwave transmitter, the mast of Naval Radio Transmitter Facility Grindavik, and the longwave radio mast Hellissandur.

Those who have seen Asian and American skyscrapers with their tops in the sky will probably be surprised. What is so peculiar in this mirror-coated high rise? Although it is the tallest building in Iceland, it is still small. It has only 20 floors and a height of 77.6 meters, which is 3.1 meters higher than the Hallgrimskirkja church located in the capital. But let’s not forget that Iceland is a small country with only 200 thousand people. Moreover, it is located on an island full of volcanoes that is seismologically active: there is no need to compete in height. Icelanders value calmness and steadiness above all else.

The building was designed by the architects of the ARKIS architectural group. The Smaratorg Tower has been open since February 2008 as an office building that neighbors the Smaralind shopping mall, making it a useful reference point for city guests: the tower makes it easy to find the nearby shopping mall. Smaralind also keeps up with the neighboring tower in the «most» rankings: it is one of the largest shopping centers in Iceland, open since 2001. The shopping space hosts more than 90 stores, boutiques, service companies, and restaurants. In terms of popularity and scale, Smaralind competes with other shopping malls in the vicinity of the capital: it is as large as the Kringlan shopping center and the old center of Reykjavik.

The Smaratorg Tower is sometimes referred to as the Deloitte Tower, a global consulting company with its headquarters here. Its name, placed at the top of the tower, can be seen from afar.
