Visiting Veszprem, it is necessary to walk to the northern side of the palace, where is located the incredibly beautiful Cathedral of the Roman-Catholic Church - St. Michael's Cathedral. The main sanctity of the Veszprem Archdiocese has a long 1000-year history.

The first basement and the plan of construction were made in 1001, and related to the Roman style; later the cathedral was rebuilt to the Gothic style, and after – to the Baroque one.

Today, inside there is preserved the Roman chapel of St. George the Victorious, which was constructed in the 5th century. According to the legend, there, one of the heirs of the Hungary, St. Emerik took an oath of celibacy. In the southern part of the church is located the chapel of his mother, Gisela of Bavaria. The walls of the cathedral are decorated with frescos of the 13th century, they depict the religious scenes with the apostles, including their portraits.

The Veszprem bishops had the right to crown the Hungarian queens. They conducted the ceremonies with the women, starting from Gizela of Bavaria. The last one was Zita Bourbon-Parma.

Today, on the facade of the building we can notice the medieval details, but the neo-romantic style appeared recently.  The restoration of the cathedral in 1907-1910 became the last change in the cathedral look.

The nave, a room having the ancient columns on both sides, today is covered with the flat arch. They are connected with capitals, designed as carvings patterns of the Middle-Aged Epoque Arpad (the 10th -13th centuries). Both side naves have very beautiful altars. On the northern side, there are the paintings of Ascension of Jesus Christ and the altars of St. George the Victorious; the southern nave has the altars of St. Anne and St. Emerik.

The temple is protected by St. Michael, which is explained by its name.  According to some beliefs, the conversion of the Veszprem citizens to the Christian faith took a lot of forces, and the royal influence had the significance, so the people began to take part in the service of the cathedral step by step.
